Marijuana legislation varies from state to state. Before the November 2010 election, medical marijuana was legal in 14 states and Washington, DC. But with the passing of Proposition 203 — the legalization of medical marijuana in Arizona — this November, there are now 15 states that allow the drug. Medical marijuana is not technically legal in Maryland, but because of the state’s Medical Marijuana Affirmative Defense Law — allowing those arrested for marijuana possession to be released if they can prove their pot was for medical use — most consider the state to be among those with legalized medical marijuana. This would bring the number of states allowing medical marijuana to 16.
In November, 2010, residents in seven US states voted on contests — ranging from the Connecticut governor’s race to the legalization of marijuana in South Dakota — with outcomes that would affect the future of marijuana, medical or otherwise. Overall, nine electoral battles had the potential to affect the fate of marijuana: in five cases voters chose to expand the legalization of marijuana, and in four they did not.

The AP is reporting on the Granny Purps dispensary in Soquel, in Santa Cruz County, California, which is offering a free joint to all patients who bring in four cans of food for a local food bank.
Patients are limited to just three joints a day, however, making a potential dozen cans of food donated for every patient. The food bank, The Second Harvest Food Bank, has noticed the increased donations from the cannabis community. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel:
In all, Granny Purps handed out 2,000 joints to dispensary clients and collected 11,000 pounds of food, a large and exceptional contribution for a business of its size. “We look at pounds donated per employee, and Granny Purps, with about eight employees, received the amount of donations that we’d expect a business with 30 to 40 employees to get,” said Danny Keith, chief development and technology officer at Second Harvest.
Some patients were bringing in far more than the minimum donation, such as the Sentinel’s report of a patient who brought in a five pound bag of rice. Growers were also donating some of the marijuana to be rolled into the giveaway joints. But there is still one aspect of the story that disturbs me…
When the Second Harvest barrels were first put out at the dispensary in November, donations were trickling in. After word of the promotion spread to the dispensary’s 1,900 patients, the employees at Granny Purps could barely keep up with the flood of food, and even reduced the minimum amount for the promotion from four cans of food to three.
“We only had the barrels out for three or four days before the incentive was announced, and I think our patients would have come out even without the incentive. We have an incredible group of compassionate patients,” [said Nancy "Granny Purps" Black,] “… I love that our patients are so compassionate. When we told them that we were doing this, their response was amazing.”
The Sentinel explains that the free joints regularly cost $10. Really? Ten bucks for a joint? Let’s see, I can go buy a dozen cans of peas for less than a buck a can, turn them in at Granny Purps for $30 worth of joints? Who wouldn’t be compassionate?
2,000 joints handed out is $20,000 worth of product Granny Purps could just give away without feeling any hurt on their bottom line… do you think maybe these dispensaries are marking up the prices just a little too high? Maybe those barrels could’ve remained out for truly compassionate donations AND Granny Purps could have cut a $20,000 check to the food bank?
I’m happy the food bank got all that food. I’m happy that the Granny Purps patients could get joints for a more reasonable cost of $3-$5 worth of canned food instead of $10. But I’m disappointed that prohibition still exists and patients have become accustomed to paying so much for marijuana. Remember, this is medicinethat they’re allegedly collectively cultivating and cooperatively distributing.

Missouri law enforcement authorities raided a Kansas City house and confiscated 500 marijuana plants this morning after a year-long investigation.
Officials arrested a 30-year-old man who lived at the home in the 400 block of Lawn Avenue, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Wood. He said the home served as an elaborate indoor greenhouse for the illegal plants.
A woman and juvenile who also lived at the home were not arrested.
The highway patrol and several other organizations, including Kansas City Power & Light Co., investigated the marijuana operation. The electric company got involved after it was determined that the resident was stealing power, Wood said.
Nebraska state troopers have unwrapped more packages containing marijuana this holiday season.
The Journal Star in Lincoln reported that a trooper stopped a pickup truck Monday afternoon on Interstate 80 near Lincoln. A drug-sniffing dog searched the vehicle and found 42 pounds of marijuana a in several gift-wrapped boxes.
The driver of the pickup, 55-year-old Randy Fleener of California was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana with intent to deliver.
A state patrol spokeswoman said it was the third time this holiday season that troopers have stopped vehicles containing gift-wrapped marijuana. Those traffic stops both occurred on Dec. 16 and nearly 48 pounds of wrapped marijuana was found.
State troopers in Iowa also stopped a vehicle on I-80 in Council Bluffs that contained 65 pounds of gift-wrapped marijuana last month.

Los Angeles City Council Adopts Motion To Ban All Medical Marijuana Collectives In The City

Attached is the motion that Los Angeles city (silly?) council adopted last
week asking the city attorney to draft a new ordinance that would repeal the
current ordinance and ban ALL medical marijuana facilities in Los Angeles, a

Oakland, Calif. suspends pot ordinance

Oakland, Calif. has dropped plans to allow legal marijuana farms in the city after officials were told they could be vulnerable to prosecution, officials said.
The city council suspended Oakland’s cultivation ordinance, adopted in July to raise new city revenue and rein in the black-market farms operating in the city, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday.
The ordinance would have permitted four large farms whose total output would have supplied a substantial portion of the medicinal marijuana needs of the Bay Area.
The council took the action to suspend the ordinance after Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley warned the ordinance conflicted with state law.
“It remains an open question,” O’Malley wrote to the council, whether city officials and staff “who aid and abet or conspire to violate state or federal laws in furtherance of a city ordinance are exempt from criminal liability.”
The suspension does not kill plans for licensed marijuana farms, as the council asked city staff to return Feb. 1 with amendments that would bring the ordinance into line with state law.
The ordinance was contingent on the passage of Proposition 19, a state ballot measure rejected by voters in November that would have legalized recreational use of marijuana for adults, the Chronicle said.
“The cultivation ordinance the city was doing had been based on Prop. 19 passing,” council President Jane Brunner said. “Now there has to be a regrouping.”

Fatal car crash into man’s home reveals extensive indoor pot farm

Police in Maryland discovered an indoor marijuana farm during an investigation of a crash in which a young driver plowed his car into a man’s home.
Richard Marriott, 44, of Ellicott City, Md., was arrested on Wednesday morning after cops found an extensive marijuana growing operation in his home, with nearly 20 large pot plants, a hydroponic system, lights and other smaller plants, police said.
Cops and firefighters were investigating Marriott’s home after a 20-year-old man, Bryan Bolster, crashed his BMW into it at around 11 p.m. on Dec. 10, causing part of the house to burst into flames.
Bolster was killed in the crash. Marriott and one other person ran out of the house after the crash and were not injured.
Marriott was charged with drug manufacturing, possession with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of drug production equipment.
He was released from the Howard County Detention Center on Wednesday after posting a $15,000 bond.
